The cause of ovarian cancer is not really known. Cancer happens when the cells of a certain area of the body produces too many, not enough, or alters the cells made. Most cases of ovarian cancer happen in older women, but younger women can get it as well. There are different risk factors that can help predict a woman's chance of getting ovarian cancer. The biggest factor is familial risk. If related to someone with ovarian cancer your risk of getting ovarian cancer raises.

- Have had breast, uterine, or colorectal cancer
- Eastern European Jewish background
- Never given birth or had trouble getting pregnant
- Have endometriosis
- Tested positive for a genetic abnormality called BRCA1 or BRCA2
- Menopausal Hormone Therapy
