About the Author
Jennifer Mason is a senior at Western Illinois University. She is very interested in the topic of ovarian cancer because she is a survivor of this disease. Diagnosed in July of 2011, at the age of 22, Jennifer didn't know what to think or do other than fight. After having surgery which removed her ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other cancerous tissue, she was diagnosed with Stage 3C low grade serous carcinoma of the ovaries. Currently, Jennifer is working on finishing her senior year and chemotherapy treatments. Having been through chemo the previous fall, Jennifer did not know she would have a recurrence within 5 months and be back to treatments. But with a positive attitude, loving family and friends, and amazing professors Jennifer should graduate May of 2013 with a Bachelors in Hotel and Restaurant Management.
Jennifer is so glad she was able to take Women's Health and be able to learn more about women's bodies, her body, and be able to share some of the knowledge she has gained as a medical patient and cancer survivor. Jennifer hopes this project rings true to the information currently in the medical world about ovarian cancer and hopes it may help a woman who doesn't quite know what is going on with her body but feels like something is not right.
Being the youngest of three girls, who all grew up on a farm, Jennifer only hoped of becoming a baker, and not a cancer patient and survivor. Since being diagnosed Jennifer has worked to spread the would of awareness and prevention to anyone who will listen. Jennifer has spoken for some student based medical groups and the Women's Center on Campus, she was in charge of all of the events for Ovarian Cancer awareness month 2012, and runs two tumblr sites: one about her journey, just using photos, and one with tips and advice for anyone who will listen and wants to learn more about cancer, chemotherapy, surgery, ovarian cancer and much more. Jennifer has been featured on the Local news station and in local papers bringing about awareness.
